Day 3: Hiking Isla del Sol & return to La Paz

6am: Dring Dring... Time to wake up!

6:30am: all packed, ready to hit the road and hike to the south of the island. We were told that the hike would take us 3h. The boat ferry leaves at 10:30am, so we have time.

6:40am: we have crossed the village, walked past the pigs, walked past the sheep, walked past the donkeys and asked a guy for direction... good to go, we start climbing the little mountain. It's hard to breathe, but we are feeling pretty good.

7:40am: we are at the top of the little mountain, and have found the ridge path that runs all along the island. The view is stunning from up here, but we're feeling out of breath for a change!

7:55am: we reach a little hut shielded by a wall. We decide to stop there for breakfast. We bought sandwiches at the villages yesterday evening, but this morning they look gross. Camille and max have meat sandwiches, and I have an egg sandwich. The meat ones don't seem fresh and have a weird smell, so we decide to chuck them, and we share the egg sandwich. The view is spectacular, 360 degrees on the lake, and further to the Bolivian side and Chilian side. It's cold and windy though, so we don't stay too long.

8:15am: we keep walking along the Inca path to the south.

8:50am: we have almost reached the south of the island, when a young guy offers to drive us back to Copacabana with his boat. This would save us 1h30 of pointless waiting time at the south ferry, so we agreed. We walk down the south west side of the island to reach his boat and the view is once again breath-taking.

9:20am: we climb abord the boat

10:45am: we are back at Copacabana. The sun is warm but the air is cold. We have a bit of time to kill before lunch.

11:30am: lunch at one of the beach shack. They all cook the same thing: Titicaca trout! We order one each, and are served 10min later. The trout is massive! We have an entire trout each.

12:30pm: Still have time before the 1:30pm bus, so we stop at a cafe for a "coca mate" (herbal tea made with coca leaves)

1:30pm: We climb aboard the very same bus, with the very same driver. We know what to expect, and brace ourselves to be bored for 5 hours.

4:30pm: Still in the bus, I can't wait to be off the bus as I'm feeling weird.

5:30pm: We finally arrived at La Paz, and I'm definitely feeling sick now. I'm shaking, I've got a bit of fever etc... I thought I caught something or ate something bad, but in retrospect this was altitude sickness triggered by this morning's hike. Headaches, shortness of breath, very queasy... not comfortable at all.

6pm: Back at the hotel, where I go straight to bed for a nap.

7:30pm: I decide to join Max and Camille for dinner although I probably should have stayed in bed. The restaurant we wanted to go to is closed, so we pick a Cuban restaurant in the same street. Ambiance is really cool, tons of decorations on the walls and awesome Cuban music. Food arrives, I had ordered some sort of beef specialty, filled with cheese and ham. Not too bad, but looks quite overcooked!

9pm: End of the day for me, I'm down!

Final words

The three of us were thick as thieves during these amazing 12 days! What a great trip :) We covered quite a bit of ground in such a short time. Here's the map, thanks to the GPS tracker lent by our tech sponsor Stephan! Thanks Stephan :) Full map here:  https://share.garmin.com/SimonDeconde Here's what we loved: the country-side: amazing landscape, great for hiking... We wished we could have hiked more! being immersed in another culture without hundreds of tourists around: the low season helped, but even in high season, we wouldn't expect Bolivia to be too touristy, especially more remote parts like Sajama the fact that even at 4000m+, there are still huge mountains around you the alpacas! :) Here's what we didn't like so much:  the approximate concept of time (see our posts)... The bus rides always take more time than announced, so you need to plan accordingly. If you have time, you can relax and probably even enjoy this difference in culture, ...

Day 4: Bus to Sajama

7am: I still feel like shit, but a tiny bit better. Today, we take the bus to Sajama, the volcanic area in Bolivia that has the highest peaks of the country (~6,500m). We pack our bags and leave the hotel. Based on the information we received, we should take 2 buses: 1 bus to Patacamaya (1h), then a second bus to Sajama (3h). 8:30am: our taxi pick us up and takes us to the Bus Terminal. Breakfast at the terminal (cake and tea) 9:30am: the bus leaves the terminal and takes FOREVER to leave La Paz. Traffic is really bad, and the driver doesn't seem in a hurry and stops for 15min to go shopping. 11:45am: we FINALLY arrive at Patacamaya. The first leg of the journey took 2h15 instead of 1h. We are starting to understand that the concept of time isn't the same around here! 12pm: we find the 12am bus to Sajama, which only left at 12:45pm (again, different concept of time). That gave us time to go to a local restaurant to get the lunch special: a very very hearty...

Day 2: Bus to Isla del Sol (Lake Titicaca)

6:30am: Driiinnggggg 7:00am: The bus picks us up at our hotel! Pretty cool. We were told that the bus took 3h to do La-Paz to Copacabana, so we were expecting to get there by 10ish The outskirts of La Paz are all in construction, half finished buildings, very very bad roads with massive potholes, wild dogs everywhere. 12pm: We finally made it to CopaCabana! It took more than 5hours... Nice little town touching the lake, obviously very touristy usually, but pretty empty right now in low-season. 1:30pm: we have booked a boat to get to Isla Del Sol. We climb aboard and sit on the roof to have a good view. We quickly put on our jumpers and jackets as the wind is fierce on the lake. 3:30pm: we reach the north part of the Island, where we decided to sleep tonight. 2h boat ride, we didn't expect it to take that long! We explore the village a bit and look for an accommodation. A young kid comes to us and says "...
